This is
a blank 1919 Driver's License Exam from the Detroit Police Department. This comes from a time when Detroit led the world in traffic planning and enforcement. There were no traffic lights or lines on the roads or parking places in 1919. Detroit was chaos and they decided to bring an end to reckless driving and
countless pedestrian deaths, many being children killed in front of their own homes. Detroit wanted to put an end to this state of chaotic anarchy on the roadways in 1919 and helped sponsor Act #368 of 1919 to start regulating driving in Michigan. Detroit began by trying to educate drivers on things like speed and velocity, how to make a left turn, etc... They took a tennis court striping machine from the Detroit Athletic Club and started putting crosswalks, middle stripes and parking places on the roadways. They also decided to be one of the first places in America to license drivers and not just cars. This exam administered by the Detroit Police Department was the first attempt in Michigan to license drivers. There is even a question on it where they ask if you've ever killed anyone and if so, what their name and address were. It is a very rare piece of police and automotive memorabilia. Measures 8.5" wide by 11" tall.
